About me

Headshot of Brent Caulfield

I've always loved games. One of my earliest memories is playing MechWarrior in my dad's homemade mech cockpit. Growing up, RTS was my genre, starting with StarCraft and Warcraft, but as a teenager I got into competitive FPS games like Day of Defeat, Counter-Strike, and Unreal Tournament. That love of competition kept growing for years: I played LAN tournaments and drove around the country to play StarCraft 2 at MLG.

Eventually just playing games wasn't enough. A friend convinced me to work on a project with him that started as a wizard arena shooter and gradually became a fantasy MOBA shooter. We ran our first alpha test with friends and played for most of the day, decided we had a potential hit, and went all-in on making it a commercial product. Building an MVP and getting through Steam Greenlight was the first big step. After a semi-successful but ultimately failed Kickstarter we kept at it, launched in Steam Early Access, and shipped the full release of Grimoire: Manastorm in late 2017 under my first company, Omniconnection.

From there I joined Chromatic Games (formerly Trendy Entertainment) in my hometown of Gainesville, FL. I started as a design intern in May 2019 and spent about four years on a small but great team working on the Dungeon Defenders franchise, including Dungeon Defenders: Awakened, working my way up from Game Designer to Senior Game Designer by early 2023.

In March 2023 I joined Tripwire Interactive as a Senior Game Designer on Killing Floor 3, working remotely, and in July 2026 I became the game's Lead Game Designer. In October 2024 I also founded Second Shift Games, where I'm co-owner and Lead Game Designer, leading a team of game designers on Starforged Legacy. After two years of development it launched in Steam Early Access in June 2026, and we're also working on Starforged: Siege.

That's nearly 14 years in game development since February 2013, and I'm still based in Gainesville, FL. Along the way I've built deep expertise in Unreal Engine 4 and 5, and these days I also use AI tools throughout development, for prototyping, design documentation, and production workflows.
